Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was conducted in advance of a proposed development. Archaeological remains relating to the early medieval period may have survived, although there was no evidence for this. The proposed development area was in part of Durham where tenements were established during the 14th century or earlier, on the edge of the urban area. Deposits relating to the use of the tenement, or to structures built on the street frontage in the medieval or post-medieval period, had the potential to survive. The current structures on the site were of 19th and 20th century date. The planning authority was likely to require that a basic photographic record of the existing structures be made in advance of their demolition, along with a trial pit within the cellar in order to evaluate the presence or absence and type of any archaeological deposits that may have survived.
