Abstract:
The archaeological assessment related to the consideration of any future development of the site. The site lay adjacent to an Area of Archaeological Significance, and only about 60m to the southwest of a SAM (No. 27921). The SAM was a Roman temple complex dating to the early part of the second century AD. Other archaeological discoveries within a 1 km of the site included Palaeolithic and Bronze Age tools, a Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age transitional occupation site, Roman features, structures, and waste material, and medieval ridge and furrow. There was important archaeology surrounding the development site, and based on archaeological and documentary evidence there was theoretically a high potential for archaeology on the site despite the lack of any direct references. The proposed development was for six office blocks with a restaurant/bar and leisure facility. There would have already been a significant impact upon any surviving archaeological deposits with the construction of the present Engineering Works in the 1950s. It was therefore proposed that an evaluation would be required to determine the nature and degree of survival of any archaeological deposits on site. [Au(abr)]
