Abstract: |
Areas of archaeological potential identified during the earlier (Stage 1) assessment/evaluation exercise were investigated. A limited range of archaeological deposits were excavated and recorded. These were, in the main, water management features of gullies or ditches, sometimes with associated banks. Limited evidence of activity associated with charcoal burning was recorded, as well as a number of undated features. The presence of a medieval or early post-medieval fishpond was confirmed, although no dating evidence was recovered from the primary fills of this feature. A very small artefactual assemblage was recovered, which was largely composed of post-medieval material. A single unstratified flint flake was also found. No evidence of occupation was found, and no firm evidence of industrial or craft activity. The excavated deposits were associated with earthworks of ridge and furrow identified during Stage 1. Building survey comprising both drawn and photographic records was carried out in order to record a number of Second World War defensive features. Earthwork survey was also carried out in order to provide a detailed record of the earthworks identified during Stage 1.[AIP] |
