Abstract:
Further excavation and a watching brief were carried out on the site of a new supermarket and access roundabout. The main archaeological components comprised mutually aligned ditches and gullies, suggesting the main function of land division and demarcation. Two parallel linear ditches associated with smaller ditches and gullies are interpreted as a droveway with attached settlement, dated by ceramics and by radiocarbon to the Later Bronze Age. The site provides the first good evidence for large scale land division of this period in Kent. It is suggested that the settlement was an arable counterpart to specialised transhumant pastoralism on higher and lower ground. A large quantity of flintwork was recovered mostly being Bronze Age in date. Medieval chalk pits were also recorded. [Au(abr)]
