Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to development. Sources indicated that the proposal site lay within an area of archaeological interest, in an area known to have been the centre of a substantial Roman pottery industry in the 2nd to 4th centuries, c.0.5km to the west of the Dorchester-Alchester Roman road. Roman pottery kilns of 3rd to 4th century date and evidence of Roman occupation had previously been discovered in the area surrounding the site. Following the decline of this industry the site was likely to have remained largely undeveloped, apart from the construction of the railway, until the 20th century. The first known building on the site was the iron foundry, constructed between the 1920s and 1950s. It was difficult to assess how much damage to any existing archaeological deposits would have taken place with the construction of the foundry, as it was not clear if the site had been made up prior to construction. If the latter had occurred, then many of the superficial foundation would not have impacted on archaeologically relevant levels. [Au(adp)]
