Abstract:
The desk-based assessment identified that the site had been fields in the medieval period and was developed by the end of the 19th century, including an area of factories, transport systems and housing. In the eastern part of the site lay the Tallow Hill cemetery, the major city cemetery between 1823 and 1874, remaining in occasional use up to 1895. The subsequent re-development of the area included the demolition of virtually all the houses and the construction of new factories in the 1970s. The assessment identified moderate to high potential for the survival of important archaeological deposits. The cemetery was potentially of national significance. It was also possible that part of one of Worcester's early porcelain factories lay within the development area: if foundations of the factory or extensive dumps of porcelain existed in the development, these were also potentially of national significance. Recommendations were made for site investigations as the second stage of archaeological evaluation. [Au(abr)]
