Abstract: |
A desk based study and visual inspection was carried out on the site. Although no clear documentary references to the Well were traced, its position suggests that it may well be of archaeological importance. There is a reference to a well on the accounts of Lindisfarne Priory and these possibly relate to Jenny Bell's Well. The topography and alignment of archaeological features in relation to Anglo-Saxon monasteries is discussed and this theory is used to suggest that the site is possibly an important Anglo-Saxon well of possible ritual significance. The well is now a shallow depression cluttered with recent debris and it is suggested that the site should be carefully monitored should any work proceed further than the clearance of recent debris.
