Abstract: |
The small area of land which was subject to the archaeological monitoring covered by this report lay at the north-east side of the church of St. Peter and St. Paul. It followed the demolition of the old vestry and the preparation of the area for the construction of a new, larger, parish room. The old building was recorded before demolition. Following the earlier evaluation of the site it was known that the stratigraphy around the church was disturbed indicating continual use of the area as a burial ground over a long period of time. The area of land to the south of the church was still in use as a burial ground. Due to the larger area and greater depth of the foundations for the parish room it was anticipated that more burials would be found than the single coffined inhumation and quantity of charnel fragments that were discovered in the initial evaluation. This, as the monitoring took place over four weeks, turned out to be the case. The complex, intercutting nature of the burials at different depths from the ground surface (from 0.5m - 1m+) also demonstrated the long-term use of the area for burial. As part of the archaeological monitoring, inspection of any stonework discovered in the disturbed soil was made to identify any possible sculpted pieces, as was evident built into the church wall. No such pieces were found. Examination of the deposits for any other artefactual remains was also made with some exciting discoveries. This included an example of mid- to late 7th century Anglo-Saxon high status metalwork, and a copper alloy belt buckle associated with a small whetstone. Other finds included pottery sherds and flints. [Au(abr)] |
