Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of engineers' test pits in the basement of the present building which was to be refurbished. Archaeological deposits were found to have been truncated with the construction of the basemented building on the 1860's and by earlier post-medieval activity. The natural brickearth subsoil was recorded in a single test pit, elsewhere the brickearth appeared to have been truncated by deep deposits and features of probable Saxon or early medieval date. Two deep pits were investigated; slumped into these early features were successive layers of occupation, floor or yard surfaces. [AIP] |
