Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a cable trench which crossed a cropmarked ditch. During earlier excavations, the ditch had produced fragments of Romano-British tile. The remains of a Neolithic settlement lay nearby, and a cropmark complex representing a Roman villa lay to the north and east. Part of the villa was a Scheduled Ancient Monument, Warwickshire No. 162. During the watching brief, no archaeological remains were observed. The trench was aligned c.1m west of an existing boundary hedge, and may have been excavated along the line of a previous field boundary ditch. This would account for the apparent absence of the cropmark ditch at the northern end of the trench. It was therefore likely that any further features which may have crossed the boundary ditch had also been obscured. [Au(adp)] |
