Abstract:
Substantial stone footings were discovered during the evaluation which led to a one-day evaluation to expose the extent of the remains. Two wall foundations of up to 50cm depth were recorded along with a brick internal wall and a more substantial brick foundation for an external wall. A possible floor level existed c.25cm beneath the wall top level. There were no finds. The remains belonged to a house demolished in the third quarter of the 19th century with the wall footings reused as part of the surface in a cobbled yard area for the 20th century Copster House. The remains may have been part of a timber framed building of 16th or 17th century date, but an earlier origin could not be ruled out as there was a messuage at Copster Hill in the early 15th century. It was hoped that the walls could be preserved as part of a landscaped area. [Au(abr)]
