Abstract: |
Relatively recent archaeological deposits were observed, which proved to be backfilled cellars of 18th or 19th century date. The highest survival of these was at approximately 13.8m OD, immediately below the existing ground floor slab and its associated make-up. Similar material was observed in the upcast from 19 pile augering locations, with some earlier deposits (post-medieval in provenance) at depths greater than those reached by the pits. Whether these were within cut features or not was unknown. Natural ground, in the form of brickearth, was only observed during the augering. For the majority of this the brickearth was at c.10.7m-11.2m OD, except for the two northernmost piles where it was observed at c.13m-13.2m OD. This latter observation may have indicated the survival of the bank of natural brickearth that formed the eastern boundary of the precinct of the Priory and Hospital of St Mary-without-Bishopsgate.
