Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development within a medieval village. A Victorian church nearby may have lain on an earlier, medieval site, whilst evidence of prehistoric and Romano-British activity had been recorded within 350m of the site. During the evaluation, prehistoric deposits were recorded within a ditch or boundary gully, and artefacts of Late Neolithic to Middle Bronze Age date were found. Medieval features, containing significant quantities of pottery, included a ditch, a pit, and two post holes which were probably not contemporary but which may nonetheless have been related to a structure. Post-medieval pottery was also recovered, and a bank which may have represented a degraded wall corresponded with a continuation of a boundary to the east. Further excavation of parts of the site and a watching brief of some areas of ground disturbance were recommended. [AIP] |
