Abstract:
The assessment found that there had been no significant finds from the prehistoric or Roman period found near the site. Consequently there was no significant potential for archaeological material from these periods to be found. The earliest development of the town of Rickmansworth was in the area of the Bury Manor and took place in Saxon times. This was also the centre of the medieval town around the manor and the church. In the post-medieval period or possibly the late medieval, ribbon development spread along the High Street around the market hall in the middle of it but this did not spread up the slope to the north until the mid-19th century. In recent years the site was occupied by a 1960s shopping centre which was built following ground levelling beside the railway lines. There was thus no evidence that this part of town was the subject of significant development in historical times possibly partly because it lay on a fairly steep slope. There had been no significant finds of earlier material in the vicinity of the site. It was therefore recommended that no further work should be required to allow the discharge of the condition relating to archaeology. [Au(adp)]
