Abstract: |
A magnetometer survey covering 3.2 hectares was carried out at the proposed site of a new warehouse and industrial units at Normanton Industrial Estate. Magnetic anomalies have been identified in all five of the sample blocks. However, it was only in the north-western corner of the site that the anomalies were thought to be of archaeological significance. Here a linear anomaly, indicative of an infilled ditch, has been identified parallel with a cropmark feature that may be caused by either an outcropping coal seam or an earthwork bank. This feature and the linear anomaly appear to be at the centre of the activity in this part of the site as suggested by the numerous other magnetic anomalies seen in this block. Some of these anomalies were interpreted as being caused by activity associated with coal extraction whilst others may be indicative of archaeological activity, possibly Iron Age/Romano-British date.
