Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development. A group of Roman cremation burials had been found in the near vicinity, along the line of a Roman road which cut through the site. The boundary of Dunmow Park, which was thought to have denoted the line of the Saxon and medieval Manor of Great Dunmow, also bisected the site. A ditch was revealed within two of the six evaluation trenches, and a probable continuation of it was revealed within a third trench. Eight abraded Roman pottery sherds were recovered from the latter feature in association with modern debris. The anticipated Roman road and cemetery and the Saxon/medieval park boundary were not revealed, and it was thought that the site had been largely disturbed during its use as a railway yard. [AIP] |
