Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of a 2m by 2m trial trnech, was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of a meeting room extension immediately to the north of the church tower. The surface of the churchyard here lay c.1m above the fields to the north and west, and a thick deposit of clay silt recorded within the test pit may have been formed by the digging of a ha-ha around the churchyard, with dumping of the spoil within the perimeter wall. A cobbled surface was recorded beneath the sulty clay, and may have represented a former path around the church. Below, a further dump of silty clay sealed the edge of a pit or ditch, the latter feature being only partly revealed by the trench. Both the cobbled surface and the pit/ditch remained undated; there was no clear indication that either might pre-date the present church building. [Au(abr)] |
