Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of two service trenches, within a SAM comprised of a series of earthworks forming the remains of a deserted medieval village. The remains surrounded Langford Old Hall and a crew yard. The latter comprised a series of brick built barns around a central courtyard, which were to be converted for residential use. Langford Old Hall was a substantial three bay house which was typical of the early 17th century, and was thought to have originally been a hunting lodge. During the watching brief, no archaeological features were exposed. However, the excavations demonstrated that the existing hall road had been built by raising the ground level in the post-medieval period, and that it had not had any visible impact on any archaeological remains, so that any features present would not have been affected by the construction of the road or by the current works. A small background assemblage of late post-medieval transfer printed earthenware and brick fragments was noted. [AIP] |
