Abstract: |
Archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of residential development. The site lay at the southeast corner of the historic core of the village which had a regular layout and appeared to represent a planned settlement. St Michael's Church and Bolton Lane on a south facing slope above a small stream may have represented some of the earliest elements in this layout. Five evaluation trenches were excavated, targeted on locations known to have been occupied by buildings in the 18th century and possibly earlier. No remains of the structures shown on the 1790 plan of the village were discovered, although a sequence of drainage features appeared to be of this date and 18th century material was widespread on the site, attesting to occupation in this period. Four sherds of medieval pottery were recovered but no features of earlier than 18th century date were identified. [Au(abr)] |
