Abstract: |
During the Spring of 1997 coast protection work took place in the northeast corner of Old Town Bay. This involved disturbance to archaeological deposits - a limpet midden exposed in the low cliff face and two peat layers lying below the surface of the beach - and, as a result, a small amount of archaeological recording was carried out. The midden proved to be of relatively recent date (19th century), having perhaps been deposited as hardcore for a cliff-top track. Radiocarbon dating and environmental analysis of the lower peat deposit indicated that between the Late Iron Age and early medieval periods the site consisted of an area of shallow freshwater surrounded by a largely open landscape, with arable fields and pasture bordering the wetland. Following an episode of sand encroachment, the upper peat began forming within a smaller environment, some time during the 10th to 12th centuries AD. The site itself supported sedges growing in damp grassland, which was subsequently inundated with sand. [Au] |
