Abstract: |
<summary>A desk-based study of three areas of land to the east and south of Amesbury was undertaken. Area 1, bounded to the north by the A303 and to the west by a minor road from Boscombe Down to Bulford, contained a small number of linear features including a very substantial ditch and eroded field banks or lynchets, and the sites of a number of ploughed-out Bronze Age round barrows. Area 2, to the east of Area 1 on rising ground to the north of Earl's Farm Down, contained a similar range of features to Area 1 but in a greater concentration. Area 3, on high ground to the south of Amesbury between the River Avon and Boscombe Down, contained a major settlement of probable Iron Age and Romano-British date, a roadway which fell out of use before the Medieval period, a flight of medieval strip lynchets, a ploughed-out round barrow, and the findspot of a Roman hoard. {italon}AIP{italoff} |
