Abstract: |
The concentrations of archaeological finds and observations represented occupation and use of this area of Melton Mowbray in the past. Evidence for the Anglo-Saxon period had been recorded in the form of a sizeable cemetery located within 100 metres north of the proposed development. The cemetery contained upward of 60 inhumations, with associated grave goods. Such cemeteries are not scarce but many contain rare or unusual artefacts or features. The proposed development lay outside of the medieval core of the town, probably within fields. In the 19th century a brickyard was established which almost certainly extended into the study area. Late 19th century terraced housing was also built on the site. Such intrusions were likely to have removed archaeological deposits within their confines. [Au(abr)] |
