Abstract: |
Fifteen test-pits were machine excavated for purpose of hydraulic modelling of the proposed channel realignment of the River Skearne. Archaeological monitoring of the test pits was undertaken and revealed evidence of waterlogging and localised peat deposits at a depth of c.3 metres below the present ground surface. Pollen analysis of the peat deposits indicated that two separate episodes of post-glacial peat formation could be identified. On the basis of the absence of alder pollen, the earliest deposit was dated to between 10,000 to 7,000 years before the present (BP) and a second deposits was dated to circa 6,700 BP. An elk bone was recovered from the earlier of the two deposits. No direct evidence of archaeological artefacts was encountered. [Au] |
