Abstract: |
<summary>Geophysical and topographical surveys were undertaken as part of a landscape management review. The geophysical data indicates that the abbey grounds are considerably disturbed by the 1920s excavation; much of the area seems to be mantled with excavation spoil. Several excavated features can be correlated with geophysical anomalies, and the road or monastic boundary is shown to continue south-east. Further kilns, hearths and possibly graves exist in the unexcavated areas, and a possibly early cloister was detected. No archaeological features were detected beneath the floor of the abbey. A building complex associated with the cloisters, but of uncertain function, is preserved south of the abbey church. An infirmary or other large building extends south of the chancel, and there is some evidence for robbed medieval buildings in the central portion of this field. Remains of medieval ridge and furrow were detected. {italon}AIP{italoff} |
