Abstract: |
The deposits and features revealed appeared to indicate a continuation northwards of an extensively-excavated settlement/industrial complex located just to the south of the site. The chronology of the site provided by the pottery showed that several features were 2nd century in date, with activity continuing into the 3rd and 4th centuries. The deposits comprised boundary features (gullies), structural features (post holes), pits (for rubbish or storage), a large pit (or quarry) and a dump. Of particular interest was the finding of the possible quarry pit which, if correctly identified, would have been used to obtain sand. It was possible that the sand was required as a tempering agent for pottery production. The large amount of pottery recovered may have been waste from this production. [Au(adp)] |
