Abstract:
An addendum to the Combined Heat and Power Plant desk-based assessment was produced to assess the archaeological implications of the construction of a Motor Transport Facility to the south of the area assessed for the CHP Plant. The proposed development would consist of a main building sited on the area of a former hangar building, with a service yard on its western side. The site lay within an area of identified archaeological potential, especially for the prehistoric to Roman periods. An area of linear cropmarks had been identified in the north of the proposed MTF site. However, this archaeological potential had been severely compromised by the fact that the topsoil and alluvium, which must have originally extended across the site, had been removed over most of the MTF Site to a depth of c.1.05m - 1.40m. This would have removed all archaeological deposits on top of, and within, the alluvium. There was a possibility that the bases of deeply cut archaeological features may still have survived where they extended through the gravel, and there was a slight possibility that Mesolithic remains may have survived on the surface of the gravel. There may also have been islands of alluvium and possible non-modern Made Ground surviving within the site in as yet unidentified locations. [Au(adp)]
