Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site, part of which lay within an Area of Special Archaeological Significance, identified that no prehistoric or Roman finds other than an Iron Age gold coin had been found within a 1km radius of the site, and that the focus for Saxon and early medieval settlement was thought likely to have lain 1km to the north-west. The road which formed the northern boundary of the proposal site had been documented since 1549. 19th and 20th century development within the Phase 1 area was thought to have caused near complete destruction of any archaeological deposits, whilst the Phase 2 area had also been developed, particularly during the 1960s. It was concluded that the Phase 1 area had very little archaeological potential, but that the Phase 2 area had a moderate potential for evidence of prehistoric settlement, and for the later medieval and post-medieval periods. It was recommended that no fieldwork should be undertaken in the Phase 1 area, but that the extent of post-depositional impacts and the impacts of the proposed development within the Phase 2 area should be further assessed when more detailed geotechnical data and a plan of the proposals became available.
