Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken of the Central Terminal Area 33KV Reinforcement Scheme which was located along the northern perimeter of Heathrow Airport over a distance of c.3.4km. Along the line of the trenching, numerous modern service trenches had truncated both the 'brickearth' and gravels, as well as four large borrow pits which had previously been excavated to a greater depth than the current trench. In those areas which were undisturbed by these recent intrusions the stratigraphic sequence comprised topsoil overlying a thick deposit of 'brickearth' which in turn capped the gravels. The amount of disturbance was concentrated in the eastern half of the site, although some services were present elsewhere. During monitoring no archaeological features or deposits were visible.
