Abstract: |
The watching brief recorded archaeological features dating from the 12th century onwards. The earliest ditches on the site were not aligned to the line of the High Street which appeared to have been established before the 14th century. The alignment of the early ditches and a lack of dating evidence for pre-conquest activity seemed to suggest that the core of the village was not established in this area until after the Norman conquest, contradicting an earlier proposal (Ravensdale, 1974). Later evidence of farmyard areas indicated that the site maintained a rural character for most of its history. [Au(abr)] |
