Abstract: |
The area around Hornsea was known to have been exploited since the Mesolithic period although the earliest evidence for the town itself dated from the mid-Saxon period. Hornsea was already a sizeable settlement provided with a church by the time of the Domesday Book and grew into an important economic centre throughout the medieval period. It expanded in size along Westgate and Southgate and it was possible that 'Newbegin' was a planned development as the name implied. By the mid-15th century there were four guildhouses in Hornsea and documentary evidence suggested that one of these was on the site of The Willows on Newbegin. Various references dating from 1671 to 1814 mentioned a house or cottage named 'the Guilds house' or 'Guild house' in Newbegin. Documentary sources suggested that the house was incorporated into a 19th century building known as the Tower House. In 1844 a watch tower, known as Bettison's Folly, had been constructed in the south-western corner of the site and by 1854, when the first OS map was produced, there was a series of houses along the street frontage. These buildings survived until 1966 when the site was cleared for the construction of the nursing home, The Willows. This report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation programme, which included a documentary and cartographic study and the excavation of a series of trenches. The excavation showed evidence for the eastern boundary of the suburb of Newbegin in the late medieval period and reports on features associated with the use of the guildhouse. [Au(abr)] |
