Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out within a proposed development area, which was situated between the Saxon core and the later medieval borough in the centre of Chard. Walls and associated deposits of late medieval and post-medieval date were recorded, and undated surfaces were revealed beneath anaerobic soils and made-up ground. The surfaces comprised a path and a series of overlapping clinker, mortar, gravel and clay surfaces. A substantial limestone wall was aligned with extant property boundaries fronting nearby Fore Street. Post-medieval pottery and a 15th-17th century sherd were recovered. It was concluded that the proposed development would have a low archaeological impact, particularly as the greater part of it would not physically affect the deposits recorded. [Au(adp)] |
