Abstract:
An emergency watching brief was undertaken at Hexham Road (B6528). The watching brief was required as Transco had unknowingly excavated a trench through the line of Hadrian's Wall destroying a 0.50m wide section of the monument (SAM no. 28, SMR record 218). The trench lay within the Hadrian's Wall Corridor, defined to the north by the north lip of the Wall Ditch and to the south by the southern mound of the Vallum, which was protected as a SAM. Prior to the commencement of their operation Transco had failed to apply for Scheduled Monument Consent. After being informed of the offence Transco co-operated fully with Tyne and Wear Museums to ensure that a detailed record of the surviving remains was made. The recording of the sides of the trench revealed valuable information on the condition and preservation of Hadrian's Wall in addition to fixing its precise line in the immediate area. Although no facing stones survived, it was apparent that the core of the Wall was compacted layers of clay containing varying quantities of sandstone pieces. This represented a valuable contribution to the study of the constructional techniques employed in the building of Hadrian's Wall. [Au(abr)]
