Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed redevelopment of the site. The site lay within the Roman and medieval city boundaries and consequently, there would have been intensive occupation throughout these periods. Archaeological evidence from the Roman period on nearby sites included buildings, occupation and road surfaces. The area was part of the Crutched Friars precinct in the medieval period and almshouses were built on the east side in the 16th century. It was occupied by residential or light industrial buildings until the 19th century when a bonded warehouse was built over the whole site. The existing building was constructed in 1972. The basements of the present and previous buildings would have removed most, if not all, of the archaeological material on site. The potential for survival of archaeological deposits was low, although isolated deep cut features may have survived. The report concluded by recommending that any geotechnical pits to be excavated should be archaeologically monitored for further information on the nature and levels of deposits beneath the basement slab. This would enable an appropriate mitigation strategy to be devised. [Au(adp)]
