Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during the second phase of a project to conserve the exterior masonry of a church. The monitoring concentrated upon works to the chancel north wall, where five phases of construction and alterations were identified. The earliest standing masonry, belonging to a chancel of three bays, was ascribed to c. 1200. The chancel had been extended to the east by one bay in the 14th century, and a priests' doorway had been broken through the north wall, probably at about the same time. New windows had been introduced into the two western bays of the north wall in the 15th century. Subsequently, the earlier priests' doorway had been blocked and replaced by another to its west. The top of the chancel wall had been rebuilt when the roof had been reconstructed in 1866. [Au(adp)] |
