Abstract: |
An examination was made of timbers visible above the water level at the edge of a quarry lake. The exposure consisted of nine oak posts arranged in three lines crossing a palaeochannel, as well as some outliers, a small amount of debris and an area of stone. It was concluded that the structure was more likely to represent a bridge than a fish weir. During a subsequent site visit, the structure was examined with a view to taking dendrochronological samples. Clay surrounding three timbers was removed to a depth of c. 30mm, but the wood was found to have been shattered so that no samples could be taken. Quarry managers had proposed to reflood the area in order to preserve the site. [Au(adp)] |
