Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundwork for three dwellings. No archaeological features were found on this site despite the proximity of a Roman villa 80m to the north-east of the site. Local topography suggested that the site may have been partly stripped in the 20th century when the existing bungalow was built. The eastern part of the garden appeared to have been partly stripped in the 20th century when the existing bungalow was built. The eastern part of the garden appeared to have been terraced into the hillside, thus removing some of the archaeological stratigraphy. Despite this its was clear that there had been little activity here as there were no cut features of any sort in the undisturbed clay within the areas observed. Four pieces of prehistoric flint were found within the local subsoil, but this could only have been taken to indicate a vague presence, possibly in the Late Neolithic or Bronze Age periods.
