Abstract: |
Archaeological investigations at Cadeby Hall confirmed that the standing building was probably early 18th century in date, including the brick service wing to the rear. The chalk wall incorporated into the rear elevation was all that was visible of an earlier building, but varying wall thickness' in the standing building hinted at the presence of more extensive earlier remains. A brick extension to the rear of the building demolished in 1967, was probably contemporary with the 18th century hall and was built on part of the site of the earlier chalk building. Further extensions were added to the south and west of this one. Demolition of the extensions and removal of an adjacent brick culvert in 1967 had probably caused extensive below ground disturbance in the area of the proposed new extension. This disturbance could not be quantified on available information. [Au] |
