Abstract: |
Recording of topsoil stripping allowed the identification of a number of areas of archaeological interest. Other finds were recovered during gravel extraction, but these were less certainly provenanced. Documentary evidence suggests that the shingle was emplaced by the Anglo-Saxon period, but bones from two whales, both bearing tooling marks, may predate the shingle deposition. The area was used intensively during the medieval period and was drained with a rectilinear series of ditches. Two sites of early modern date were also found. [Au(abr)] |
