Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a garage and an extension to a house, at a site which lay adjacent to fields containing earthworks which were believed to represent an early medieval village. The foundations of a wall representing an outbuilding were revealed. A later limestone floor, which overlay make-up containing late 19th century material, had been laid inside the building. A deposit of clay containing medieval and 18th century pottery was interpreted as a levelling layer dating from the late 18th century, when the toft for Little House had probably first been established. A moulded stone with 14th century characteristics was found, built into a small retaining wall. This stone had probably originated from the medieval Cistercian Abbey of Pipewell. [AIP] |
