Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for the construction of 418 flats in 8 riverside blocks with 62 flats and 64 houses to the rear of the riverside flats. The report concluded that the gravels across the study area may have formed palaeo-landsurfaces in the Mesolithic period. A single peat unit was present on the site. This probably correlated with the Tilbury III peat unit of Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date. The study area had a moderate to high archaeological potential for the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age periods and a high archaeological potential for the Roman period. Deposits of this date may occur in association with the peats or upper alluvial clays. The alluvial deposits, and in particular the peats, had a high palaeoenvironmental potential. The study site was thought to have a relatively low archaeological potential for the Saxon to post-medieval periods. Past post-depositional impact prior to 1976 on the site was likely to have been restricted to the upper levels of the upper alluvial clay. However, the remediation of the site since the closure of the Royal Arsenal was likely to have had a very severe and widespread impact on the survival of industrial archaeological remains associated with the Royal Arsenal. The main potential archaeological impact of the proposed development was limited to the footprints of the proposed buildings within which piling would occur. Overall it was likely that some 2% of the site area would be archaeologically impacted by piling. Across 98% of the site area it was unlikely that piling would have any archaeological impact. Across the whole site area a deep layer of capping was present. Due to the presence of this material it was unlikely that pile caps, ground beams or services would penetrate archaeological deposits. The only possible exception to this was in the case of main sewers. [Au(abr)] |
