Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a terrace for the foundations of an extension to the Garden Field School in order to fulfil a condition imposed upon planning consent. The examination of the terraced area revealed that, instead of the expected 'natural', the site was on man-made ground. The site revealed no conventional types of archaeological remains or artefacts associated with it. The only point of interest was the nature of the sub-soils. Examination of the Tithe map of 1840 recorded the area as being called 'Claypit Meadow'. The report concluded that it was a reasonable inference that the excavation had uncovered a portion of a former clay pit. [Au(adp)] |
