Abstract: |
A watching brief carried out during the redevelopment of a former hospital site identified elements of the former Saxon and medieval defensive arrangement of Tamworth. The results reaffirmed the presence of the Saxon rampart and the palisade construction, together with the medieval ditch to the north. A steep-sided, undated cut containing a disturbed fill associated with 19th century ceramics was also noted. Victorian cellars appeared to have extended eastwards, although it was clear that archaeological remains existed immediately beneath the level of the hardcore, to the south of the cellars. No artefacts were recovered in association with the defensive arrangement. [Au(adp)] |
