Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation and service trenches at the Dun Cow Inn, a Grade II Listed Building with 18th century origins which lay at the centre of a medieval village. Earlier evaluation to the rear of the inn had revealed post-medieval features and evidence of 12th-13th century activity. During the watching brief, wall foundations and two cellars belonging to the existing 18th-19th century buildings were observed, and probable 17th century bricks were recovered. A stone-lined well which pre-dated the 18th century and a rubbish pit containing 18th or 19th century bottles were found. A Grade II Listed barn/stable, due to be demolished, was recorded. It was found to have been built in two stages, probably in the mid 18th and late 18th/early 19th centuries, and to have subsequently been altered. It was concluded that later redevelopments had obliterated most traces of the medieval occupation likely to have occurred on the southern part of the site. [AIP] |
