Abstract:
Little archaeological work had been undertaken in the locality of the site. Nevertheless, a few sites/findspots of prehistoric, Roman and medieval date had been recorded in the area around the site. The nearest was a circular enclosure in Hounslow Cemetery immediately to the west of the site. The date of this monument was not known, but it was morphologically similar to prehistoric enclosures in the Thames Valley. Documentary and cartographic evidence suggested that for much of the medieval and post-medieval periods the site was farmland. In the early 1920s a railway marshalling yard was built on the site. The western part of the site fell within an Archaeological Priority Area which followed the line of the River Crane. Along its banks were alluvial deposits which could have proven to be rich in well-preserved archaeological and/or environmental remains. The site was also crossed by a man-made watercourse, known as Mill Stream or the Duke of Northumberland's River, which played an important role in local milling industries from the early 17th century until the early 20th century.
