Abstract: |
A desk-based archaeological assessment was undertaken in connection with a proposed development of 24 dwellings, associated garages and access road. Formerly a shoe factory with associated areas of hard-standing, the site had become overgrown with ash and other debris covering parts of the area. Test pit results had demonstrated that much of the site had been disturbed and was therefore considered to have a Negligible to Low Archaeological Potential. Mountsorrel had developed as a borough adjacent to its 12th century castle although following the castle's demolition in the 13th century it never developed as a significant population centre. The street frontage and access road for the proposed development was within the area of the medieval borough. However, this potential was considerably reduced by the number of services which ran through it, which also made any archaeological investigation difficult. The most practical and safest approach would be to undertake a limited watching brief when construction of the new access road takes place. [Au(abr)] |
