Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site, part of which had formerly been occupied by Poulton Hall, a building demolished in 1932. In the northern part of the site, the foundations of an outbuilding were recorded, together with the remains of a wall. These features approximated to the locations of a structure and a boundary depicted on the 1st edition OS map. Two shallow linear features which may have represented ditches were also recorded. The area was covered by the remains of topsoil or garden-type soil, in keeping with use of it for cultivation. The artefactual evidence associated with these structures and deposits indicated a period of activity in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In the southern part of the site, deposits had been heavily truncated by the excavation of service trenches. The area had been covered by surfaces or spreads of stone and demolition rubble, the latter presumably dating to the demolition of Poulton Hall. [Au(abr)] |
