Abstract: |
The assessment site lay within an area of archaeological potential adjacent to historic activity on Thorney Island. There was the potential for archaeological remains to be present. While the site seemed to have been developed from the 16th century, it overlay a much earlier marshy channel environment relating to the former river Tyburn, between the raised topography of Thorney Island to the north and the sandy plateau of Tothill Fields to the south. Prehistoric activity was known from the edges of the gravel islands in the area. Although archaeological survival would have been much reduced by former buildings and basements, particularly the existing Ice Rink, boreholes had suggested that there were localised areas preserved, around and beneath this structure. Any such deposits would probably be removed by the new scheme, which included a full basement. [Au(abr)] |
