Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the development of eight houses on land adjacent to Ivy Cottage, Ivy Close, Ashington. Having been granted planning permission subject to an archaeological condition, the developer commissioned Southern Archaeological Services to conduct a desk-based assessment of documentary evidence followed by observations of the groundworks. Modern and early modern artefacts were observed in the topsoil, probably associated with 19th century housing. In addition, one severely truncated linear feature was recorded from the eastern border of the site; although undated, this feature resembled those found during the excavations at nearby America Wood, and may be post-medieval. It contained iron-working slag. No other archaeological features or deposits were found. [Au(abr)] |
