Abstract: |
The discovery of the foundations of a stone-built medieval building in the centre of the historic village of Carshalton was made during the observation of topsoil stripping. The proposed work to construct a car-park did not positively affect the surviving foundations, and beyond a sample excavation of a rough area between two fragments of the north-south wall alignment, only the cleaning and definition of the foundations and surrounding historic deposits were undertaken. Although only covering an 8 x 6m area, the remians consisted of substantial wall foundations varying between 0.85m and 1.3m thick, with an internally constructed recess or cavity within the thicker wall. Surrounding these, and abutting the masonry foundations, were a series of fairly loose deposits, comprising topsoil and brown silts, flnt nodules, chalk flecks and lumps, and morter, tile and Reigate stone fragments, all laid without definable patterm. A possible related feature was exposed in a small box section to the west of the foundations. A date for the masonry structure late in the 12th century was tentatively put forward. [Au(adp)] |
