Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for a residential development, at a site which lay c. 75m from the site of Roger's Almshouses, where several possible medieval features and a scatter of medieval pottery had been found, together with evidence of post-medieval clay pipe manufacture. The site lay close to the north of the medieval town. During the watching brief, a podzol remnant which may have indicated Bronze Age use was noted. Two deep pits and a linear feature were dated to the 12th-13th centuries. A chalk-lined well dated by pottery to the 19th century and a third, undated pit were also found; all were sealed by a thick layer of ploughsoil and garden soil. A modern brick structure of uncertain use was found below the topsoil. [AIP] |
